Lacrosse: Just a matter of time before Foothill sews this one up

I came to a lacrosse match and a game of keep-away broke out. That seemed to be Foothill’s prevailing strategy in the third quarter of its Orange County final against St. Margaret’s on Friday at Trabuco Hills High. There was no scoring for the first nine minutes of the quarter, until St. Margaret’s Dorian Flores scored with a man advantage at 2:27, and then Mitchell Cooper answered 25 seconds later for Foothill.

The most intense action came midway through the quarter, when Foothill’s John Joslin and St. Margaret’s Brad Smith looked as if they wanted to go UFC on each other. You know, that whole puff-out-your-chest thing. It happens. It’s a contact sport.

Heading into the fourth quarter, Foothill holds a 9-3 lead and is a scant 12 minutes away from earning its second consecutive berth in two years in the championship game against the North Division representative on May 9 at Trabuco Hills.

Since St. Margaret’s trails by twice as many goals as it has scored, I’m calling this one over. Foothill will be the OC representative, but to be honest, I kind of felt that way 29 seconds into the game. Foothill has had that kind of performance -- tonight and throughout the season.
