There have been very few surprises during qualifying for the girls’ events at the Southern Section-Toyota Division IV preliminaries at Carpinteria High. The favorites have been impressive. As for the challengers ... well, let’s just say it could end up being a long day.

Carlyle Davis of Marlborough, the defending 400-meter champion, looked every bit the part, smoking the competition to finish with a qualifying time of 57.73. I’m not sure if anyone is going to be able to keep up with her in the finals next Saturday.

Yasmin Woodruff of St. Mary’s Academy proved her division title in the 100 meters a season ago was no fluke. She qualified with a time of 12.17, and I’d be surprised if anyone dethrones her a week from today.
