Karynn Dunn just lifted off.

Call her ‘Air Dunn’ -- no delays, no layovers, just a smooth transcontinental flight.

I’m being too cutesy. Just call Dunn awesome.

Dunn, a junior at Diamond Ranch, nailed the day’s best in the girls’ long jump -- at 20 feet, nearly breaking the 17-year-old Division III record of 20-1.75. I felt as if I needed to remind Dunn: Yo, Karynn, this is only the prelims. The kid knows that, of course, as she said with a quick grin: ‘I’m just trying to qualify.’

Dunn is qualifying pretty easily too, and that’s because she’s one of the top talents here at the Southern Section-Toyota Division III preliminaries.

Up next for Dunn, the 100-meter hurdles, in which she’s rated as the fourth best in the state.
