Track and field: It’s Hughes, and Dominguez crew, in the 400

Joey Hughes of Long Beach Poly, the state leader in the boys’ 400 meters, was the top qualifier from the Southern Section-Toyota Division I preliminaries at Trabuco Hills.

Hughes has a season-best 46.97 from the Arcadia Invitational. He took it easy on Saturday, with a 48.09, just ahead of Dominguez sophomore Leon Dillihunt’s 48.13.

Dominguez had three of the four fastest times qualifying times. Behind Dillihunt were senior Aaron Hestor at 48.22 and junior Kivon Grant at 48.73.
