The first round of the City Section championship tees off Monday in Griffith Park and I’m not going out on a limb when I say that El Camino Real has to be considered the team to beat in the two-day tournament.

The Conquistadores dominated the 6A League (the strongest in the City) all season and proved that it was no fluke last Wednesday, winning the league tournament by five shots over Granada Hills at Wilson and Harding -- the same courses used for this week’s City finals.

El Camino Real, the defending City champion, is led by Daniel Slovis, who tied for second at league finals, and Vincent Seapara, who was fourth. With a two-day total of 150, Granada Hills’ Chris Kim took medalist honors and will join Slovis in the second foursome Monday.

Teams with the best chance to wrest the crown away from the Conquistadores are league rivals Granada Hills, North Hollywood, Cleveland and Palisades and 2A League winner Venice.

Top contenders for the City Individual title include Joe Boonoppornkul (North Hollywood), Bernard Leon (Franklin), Robin Jang (Van Nuys), Aaron Warren-Fernandez (Cleveland), Chris Lee (Palisades), Matt Goldstein (Venice) and last year’s runner-up Tom Lo (LACES).

Monday’s first round will tee off at 10 a.m., with 17 groups of four and three groups of three golfers. The second round will begin at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
