One of 12 freshmen in a field of over 70 golfers at the City Section Championships in Griffith Park, Robin Jang wasn’t supposed to contend for the individual title, let alone win it. Yet he did just that Wednesday and it could be the first of several for this cool, calm kid from Koreatown.

The 14-year-old Jang attends Van Nuys, which wasn’t in the team competition, so he flew under the radar on his way to a 73 and a share of the lead Monday on the Harding Course. That was one thing. But with the pressure cranked up a notch in the final round on the Wilson Course, he was the only player to shoot under par. He won by a stunning four shots with a sparkling two-day total of 144.

Given his mastery of the greens, Jang stands an excellent chance to repeat next year.
