I wasn’t sure what to expect once I arrived at Birmingham High for Thursday’s City Section preliminaries, and much to my surprise, a sophomore nearly stole the show. That’s right, everyone in the press box was talking about a 10th-grader.

Taft’s D.J. Morgan doubled in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles, finishing with times of 14.63 and 38.39 seconds, respectively. He also finished third in the 100 meters in 10.96, behind Reseda’s Giovannie Dixon (10.84) and Crenshaw’s DeAnthony Morgan (10.84) (make that DeAnthony Thomas, as we already have enough Morgans for this blog).

It’s reasonable to expect many more big things from the youngster at next Thursday’s section championships, also to be held at Birmingham.
