Track and field: Global warming hits Walnut -- and hard

Word has it that the Senate is considering legislation that will help reduce global warming. Unfortunately, such legislation won’t come nearly soon enough for the athletes and fans in attendance at Mt. San Antonio College on Saturday for the Southern Section-Toyota division finals. Temperature here is 97.9 degrees and rising.
The parking situation was a mess too. So if you’re still planning on heading out, bring cash because credit cards are not accepted. I found out the hard way. Also wear shorts, a hat and make sure to lather on plenty of sunscreen. Like I said, it’s hot.
Early winners from today include: Connor McCullough of Chaminade, boys’ shot put in Division III (54 feet 7 1/4 inches); Naomi Sornoso of Arrowhead Christian, girls’ discus in Division IV (117-04); James Short of St. Bonaventure, boys’ long jump in Division IV (21-10 3/4); Justin Cutler of Templeton, boys’ shot put in Division IV (55-03).
Runners who turn in the top nine performances in each event, regardless of division, advance to Friday’s Masters meet at Cerritos College. The top 12 runners in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 and ther performers who turn in one of the top 12 performances in each field event also advance.
