Baseball: Mary Star will make most out of bus ride

Mary Star will catch a movie during its three-hour long bus ride to Phelan to play Serrano in the Southern Section-Toyota Division V second round on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. Only question now -- which flick? ‘Something motivational,’ said Coach Andy Fiamengo.

Fiamengo said he has some possibilities -- ‘Rudy,’ the ‘Rocky’ movies or ‘Facing the Giants,’ an obscure film about an underdog football team. I lobbied, saying, ‘I’m from Philly and have to say you can’t go wrong with the ‘Rocky’ movies.’

‘What do you suggest, the first Rocky or Rocky II?’

I reminded Fiamengo that Rocky Balboa loses in the first one but goes the distance with Apollo Creed, then wins the belt in Two. ‘You can’t go wrong with the original,’ I emphasized.

Mary Star (21-5, 13-2) won the Camino Real League crown while Serrano (16-7, 7-5) finished third in the Mojave River League.

Now, on the ride home, Coach Fiamengo already has his cinematic selection -- ‘Major League.’

‘We just want to relax and laugh heading back,’ he says.
