There are coaches who become intimately linked with their sport, who possess a crossover appeal such that even those who aren’t followers of the game still know the name.

Where tennis is involved, Tim Mang is one of those coaches.

After 37 seasons of coaching, the most notable and recent ones at Corona del Mar, Mang announced his retirement. He guided the Sea Kings to three Southern Section titles and one national No. 1 ranking, in 1997. CdM finished this season 15-5, and lost on games in the second round of the playoffs to Thousand Oaks.

Mang will remain executive director of the National High School Tennis All-American Foundation.

He coached the boys’ program since 1993, and also coached the girls’ from 1995 to ’98. He began coaching in 1972 and coached Edison for 17 seasons. He also coached at Orange Coast College when that program achieved national prominence.

Here’s a Q&A with Mang and the Daily Pilot.
