The word ‘protean’ is obscure. Not too many blogsmiths would dare use it. Let me give it a stab...

Ashkaun Hami’s protean performance led Cleveland to its third consecutive City Section boys’ title Wednesday at the AAF/John C. Argue Swim Stadium. Hami won the 100-yard backstroke (55.42 seconds), defended his title in the 100 butterfly (51.78) and teamed with Adam Greschner, Alika Bautista and David Portillo to win the 200 medley relay (1:44.57).

The Cavaliers scored 220 1/2 points, edging Birmingham (198) and San Pedro (195).

The meet will air tonight at 9 on cable station LA36.

Birmingham, which finished as runner-up for the second consecutive year, nabbed 16 points from diving champion Patrick Cohen and a victory in the 200-free relay with Gavin Weltsch, Matt Herrera, Carlos Herrera and Stephen Leon clocking a 1:35.73.

Meanwhile, Edward Kwak became Taft’s first boys’ champion this decade, winning the 50 and 100 free events in 22.19 and 49.14; Sherman Oaks CES’s Phillip Chu defended his titles in the 200 individual medley (2:05.47) and 100 breaststroke (1:00.62) while Granada Hills’ Garrett Hubbard won the 200 free (1:46.58). San Pedro’s Alex Nelson took the 500 free in 4:42.95.

(Blogger’s note: Hey, I’ll admit it, my blogging skills are not protean.)
