Katie Tamayo must have felt as if she were on the set of a Hollywood movie and someone just kept pumping up the volume on the rain machine. Only needing one more out to end the game, rain, which had already postponed many games throughout the Southland on Thursday, began to come down hard on Tamayo and her Garden Grove Pacifica teammates.

‘I can’t believe this is happening,’ Tamayo said to herself. ‘But I worked through it and it was fine.’

Tamayo worked through that and a lot of other situations on Thursday in pitching a complete-game shutout as Pacifica beat third-seeded Lakewood, 1-0, in the Southern Section-Toyota Division II quarterfinals. Pacifica will play in the semifinals against the winner of Glendora-Vista Murrieta, a game that has halted in the second inning earlier in the day because of rain.

Here’s a short interview with Tamayo, a senior, and also a video clip of the play of the game.

Here’s the play of the game. With Pacifica ahead, 1-0, Lakewood had runners on first and third but did not score as Tamayo caught a line drive back to end the inning.

‘That line drive really killed us,’ said Lakewood Coach Andy Miramontes. ‘But hats off to them, they played great defense. It seems like we out-hit them and out-pitched them.... We just came up a little short.’
