In the running events, almost all winners come from the middle lanes, 4, 5 or 6. So it was pretty surprising to see Randall Carroll of L.A. Cathredral win from Lane 7 Friday at the Southern Section-Toyota Masters meet at Cerritos College.

The junior beat the runner on his left, second-seeded Joey Hughes of Long Beach Poly. Hughes, a senior, was the state leader at 21.10. Carroll, who earlier won the 100 meters by lowering his state-best time from 10.49 to 10.47, posted a winning time of 21.29 seconds. He dominated the second half of the race to beat Hughes’ 21.41.

Carroll has already committed to USC to play football, but he’s one of those guys who’s still going to entertain offers. Dan Arritt, the Varsity Times Insider track expert, just informed me that Carroll is the son of USC football coach Pete Carroll. I don’t think he is. Dan is not above pulling my leg.

Top-seeded Adam Long of St. Bernard’s, who was No. 2 in the state (21.20), finished fifth.
