The drought in the desert is over.

Quartz Hill swept Loara in the Southern Section-Toyota Division III finals today and became the first team from the Antelope Valley to win the crown. “We’re not just good for the desert,” said Coach Justin Harris. “We’re good for Southern California.”

No, not good -- but great.

The Rebels (26-0) won all 26 of their matches in straight games. They lost only four games this season -- all of them at the Dos Pueblos tournament in March.

“It’s unexplainable what we did. It’s unbelievable,” said Quartz Hill’s Hunter Horn. “It’s such a high standard that we’ve created here.”

Horn led the Rebels with 15 kills, Ryan Kachold added 14, Connor Cherland chipped in 42 assists and Ian Zavala recorded five blocks. “It’s pretty simple what we do, we just play hard,” Kachold said. ‘We play like we have nothing to lose.’

In the final game, Loara jumped to 5-2 lead but could not sustain any momentum. Loara’s Derek Rhyne finished with 11 kills and Brian Do had 34 assists. “Today we met a better opponent,” said Loara Coach Kristi Becker. “They were very disciplined and didn’t make many mistakes.”
