Nkawkaw Ndipagbor, a freshman at Long Beach Poly and the state leader in the 400, blazed through the one-lap race a little faster than necessary Friday during the CIF state preliminaries at Cerritos College, but with the early troubles for the Jackrabbits, she probably didn’t want to take any chances.

Her teammate and the defending state champion, junior Jasmine Joseph, won her heat as well and will join Ndipagbor on the starting line for Saturday’s final.

In the girls’ shot put, Christina Kim of El Toro picked the right time to land her personal best. Kim qualified fourth with a mark of 41-6 1/2. Her previous best throw this season was 40-11, which was good enough for 25th on the state list. Janay Tillett of Birmingham wasn’t even listed on dyestatcal’s top marks list, but she qualified eighth at 40-10 1/4.
