Within five days, Calabasas Viewpoint went from being paying customers for the Southern Section-Toyota Division VII baseball title game to winning it, getting revenge on Upland Christian for beating the Patriots in last year’s contest.

Viewpoint’s plight of having to play two semifinal games (the first one was successfully protested after Avalon won, 8-7) after contesting the substandard condition of Avalon*s playing field brings into question the Southern Section*s decision a few years ago to do away with alternate sites for the semifinals. The exceptions these days are Division I football, all boys’ and girls’ basketball and Division I baseball.

To ensure that the mess created from the Avalon-Viewpoint contest doesn*t happen again, Southern Section leaders simply need to reinstate alternate sites for baseball and softball.
