Alhambra’s Nick Quintanilla, Great Oak’s Alex Forss and Santa Margarita’s Kevin DeHuff didn’t qualify for Tuesday’s CIF State Championships at Santa Maria Country Club, but look out for them next season.

Forss, a sophomore, showed why he is regarded by many as the best in the Inland Empire at the CIF/SCGA Southern California Regional tournament by finishing two strokes behind the qualifiers. The former baseball player shot par 72 at the SCGA Member’s Course in Murrieta.

Quintanilla, a junior, picked up the sport three years ago when his father bought him some clubs at a yard sale. He is not a country club-trained golfer, but has the attention of colleges. This summer he’ll participate in some AJGA tournaments and gain some experience heading into next season. Quintanilla shot a three-over-par 75 in Murrieta.

DeHuff, a freshman, had a bad day at the course-- he finished with a seven-over-par 79 -- but still had a positive outlook. ‘There’s always next year,’ he said. To which I replied, actually, in your case, there’s always three more years. ‘Yeah, that’s right,’ he said.
