The first City vs. Valley all-star softball game, played Wednesday at Contreras, wasn’t going to be just your garden-variety game. That much was clear when the City’s top pitcher, Taylor Petty (San Pedro), gave up first-inning home runs to Kellie Caplan (El Camino Real) and Valerie Prendiz (Sylmar), the latter a three-run shot, and trailed 4-0 before she retired a batter.

In the end, though, the City team took advantage of the wildness of Valley pitching (nine walks, five hit batters, eight wild pitches), added home runs by Narbonne’s Katelynn Meredith and Lincoln’s Amber Cabada, and scored the last 11 runs of the game to come away with a 14-8 victory.

El Camino Real’s Krista Cobb, who started and finished for the Valley, struck out 14 to offset seven walks, but losing pitcher Crystal Hernandez (Sylmar) gave up four hits and hit four batters, giving up nine runs in one inning-plus of work, before Cobb re-entered to finish the game.

Destine Lauvai was perhaps the top overall performer. The Carson star was two for three with a three-run double in the City’s eight-run seventh inning, and also earned the save with three shutout innings in relief of winner Belen Benitez (Lincoln). Perelini Koria (San Pedro) and Cabada each had a pair of hits for the City squad. Alianna Telles (Sylmar) went three for four and drove in a run for the Valley.
