Baseball: It’s Round 5 and more locals are hearing their names

John Lamb, a left-handed pitcher from Laguna Hills High, has been selected by the Kansas City Royals with pick No. 145 Thursday in Round 5 of the Major League Baseball first-year player draft.

Edwin Quirarte, a right-handed pitcher at Cal State Northridge, by way of Oxnard High, was chosen by the San Francisco Giants with pick No. 147. UCLA third baseman Jermaine Curtis, a graduate of Fontana Miller High, was the 155th pick of the draft by the St. Louis Cardinals.

Bret Lorin, a right-handed pitcher from Long Beach State by way of Dana Hills High and the University of Arizona, was selected by the Seattle Mariners with pick No. 162.

Compton Centennial outfielder Chris Smith, who finished with a .708 batting average this season, has been selected by the New York Yankees with the 170th pick overall.
