Nicholas Akins, an outfielder from Riverside Community College by way of Los Angeles High, was selected by the Washington Nationals with the No. 601 pick overall Friday in Round 20 of the Major League Baseball first-year player draft. Coming out of high school, Akins was drafted in the 13th round by the Dodgers in 2006.

Jason Tweedy (originally written as Tweey, but, thanks to a loyal reader, it’s now correct), a second baseman from Cal State Long Beach who’s from Northern California, was taken 593rd by the Tampa Bay Rays.
