Servite football Coach Troy Thomas is boldly predicting big things for two sophomores, defensive end Troy Niklas, left, and center Wyatt Baker.

‘They’re ready to play,’ Thomas said.

Niklas, 6 feet 5, 225 pounds, figures to be a heavily recruited player by his senior year. He’ll make an immediate impact on defense but will also play at tight end. He passes the eyeball test.

Baker, 6-2, 255 pounds, could have the more difficult task, playing the very important center position. The Friars need him to come through.

After a week of practice, Thomas said, ‘I think we’re coming along. We’re getting a lot better. Eventually, we’re going to be a good team.’

Servite will be playing its usual tough schedule, with nonleague games against St. Paul, Crespi, Edison and Sherman Oaks Notre Dame.
