Backup quarterback Steven Zamora of Birmingham scored on a one-yard run with 5:40 left in the second quarter, and Kimbrick Collier ran in the two-point conversion to give the Patriots a 14-0 lead over Garfield.

So far, the standout in the game has been junior Davontae Brooks of Birmingham. Besides returning the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown, he also has a 44-yard reception. He’s helping to fill in for USC-bound De’Von Flournoy, who’s being used sparingly because he suffered a sprained ankle last week in a scrimmage.
