The first meeting of the City Section Interscholastic Committee on Monday will include a proposal from City baseball coaches to switch to a Division I, II and III playoff format from the current City Championship, City Invitational and City Small Schools divisions.

The Division I alignment would be made up of 25 teams determined by a committee, with 18 being selected to the playoffs and two play-in games. For example, five teams from the Eastern League -- Roosevelt, Garfield, Bell, Southeast and South Gate -- would be Division I, joining the six-team West Valley League; Sylmar, San Fernando and Kennedy from the Valley Mission; Grant, Poly and Verdugo Hills from the East Valley; and teams from the Marine and Western.

The coaches are trying to receive approval in time for the 2009 season. They also want to improve the league structure in baseball and the seeding process, but those areas need more time to make changes.
