So much for the showdown in the Moore League. No. 2-ranked Long Beach Poly has opened a 25-0 halftime lead over No. 19 Lakewood.

Poly, which has rarely passed the ball this season, was trying to work on its passing game in the first half, with quarterback Morgan Fennell completing six of nine attempts for 100 yards, including a 37-yard screen pass that went for a touchdown by Daveon Barner.

The best part of another strong Poly team is its defense. I can’t believe there’s a stronger defense in Southern California. Let’s see if somebody can find a weakness. I don’t see one. The Jackrabbits have quick linemen, experienced linebackers and another talented secondary.

Poly will get No. 3 St. Bonaventure next Friday night at Long Beach Veterans Stadium, and I know the Seraphs are looking forward to the meeting, but they are going to face a huge challenge trying to move the ball against the Jackrabbits’ defense.

As far as Lakewood is concerned, the Lancers had to forfeit four victories earlier in the week, and the absence of their top running back sure isn’t helping.
