With unbeaten Taft (4-0) set to host unbeaten Gardena Serra (4-0) Friday night, there’s good news to report about the lights on Taft’s field.

‘Every bulb is working,’ Athletic Director Mark Drucker said.

Taft’s field has been considered one of the worst in the City Section in terms of trying to see a game at night because the bulbs just don’t light the field properly. But Drucker said the school has replaced 44 bulbs at $100 apiece.

‘It’s better than it was,’ he said. ‘I don’t know if our guys will be able to catch the ball now because there will be too much light.’

Former Coach Troy Starr used to say the darkness of the field was a home-field advantage. For fans and sportswriters, it was a nightmare.
