Now I understand why USC and UCLA have offered a scholarship to junior Robert Woods of Gardena Serra. He’s nothing short of sensational, and he’s fast.

In the third quarter Friday night against Taft, he recovered a fumble that led to one Serra touchdown, made an interception that led to another TD and returned a second interception 45 yards for a touchdown to give the Cavaliers a 35-7 lead. He also caught a 15-yard touchdown pass in the first half and added a 70-yard punt return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Serra won, 49-13.

Serra, which is 5-0 and plays in the same division as Oaks Christian, shut down D.J. Morgan of Taft. The Cavaliers earlier defeated Carson, so beating another respectable City Section team should be beneficial for an expected showdown with Oaks Christian in December.

I’m not sure Serra’s offense is quite ready to take on Oaks Christian, but its defense will surely give the Lions something to think about.
