Mary Rodriguez, the grandmother of Boron’s Vinnie Rodriguez, the safety and running back who died Sept. 16 after sustaining serious head injuries during a game against Riverside California School for the Deaf four days earlier, e-mailed The Times to express her gratitude for the outpouring of support she has received from the Los Angeles area:

‘My family and I would like to thank you all for the love and support that you have given to us in our time of need,’ Mary Rodriguez wrote. ‘The outpouring of support that we have received has been overwhelming and has touched my heart more than I can say.

‘Your cards and notes have been comforting to me and I feel very blessed to know so many people are pulling for us. I did not receive return addresses on everything that I received but I would like to say thank you to all. Your support is greatly appreciated.

‘Vinnie is missed terribly by family, friends and teammates but he will never be forgotten. May God bless you all.’

Love,

Grandma Mary
