Loyola (5-3, 1-0) celebrated its first league victory in three years on Saturday night after defeating Bishop Amat, 17-6, in a Serra League game.

Running back Anthony Barr, coming off a hip pointer injury that forced him to the sideline for the second half of last week’s loss to Alemany, showed no ill effects. He carried the ball 40 times, rushing for 216 yards and one touchdown, a 68-yard run.

A 28-yard field goal by Mauricio Alfonso with 7:16 left gave the Cubs some breathing room.

Loyola’s defense played magnificiently. Ned Kirby and Robbie Paton contributed interceptions. Loyola gets unbeaten Sherman Oaks Notre Dame next Saturday at Glendale. Bishop Amat, ranked No. 10 by The Times, drops to 6-2 overall and 0-1 in league.
