Lonnie Jackson, a sophomore guard at Valencia, is off to a fast start. He has scored 23 and 21 points in two games of the Simi Valley tournament. His father, Lance, was a standout guard at Woodland Hills Taft in the 1980s.

  • Santa Ana Mater Dei Coach Gary McKnight, pictured, is going for win No. 800 on Friday against Downey in the Loara tournament. The Monarchs set a school scoring record in their 122-67 victory over North Torrance on Wednesday.
  • Fairfax junior guard Jordan Weathers is developing into a college prospect because of his excellent shooting form.
  • Pacific Hills has one of the toughest schedules for a small-schools team, with games scheduled ahead against Fairfax, Modesto Christian, Price and Windward.
  • Leuzinger is looking good in the Westchester tournament and could have a shot at upsetting Taft in the semifinals Friday night.
  • Freshman Brendyn Taylor, the son of View Park Prep Coach Brian Taylor and the younger brother of former Harvard-Westlake standout Bryce Taylor, started his high school career with a 15-point performance for View Park.
