It’s hard to snap winning streaks, but something has to give between No. 1 Palmdale and No. 4 Mira Costa tonight at 7:30 in a CIF Southern Section semifinal.

The Mustangs (9-3) have a seven-game winning streak, after losing three of their first five games. They’re in the Southern Section semifinals for the first time since 2003 and are trying to reach the title game for the first time since 2002. The Falcons (11-1) won nine straight games and are aiming for their first championship in school history. Unfortunately, one team’s momentum comes at the expense of the opponent’s season cut short. But it should make for some great football.

Palmdale quarterback Brandon Mims has completed 62% of his passes for 1,527 yards and 24 touchdowns. He’s also rushed for 621 yards and six touchdowns. That’s not all. As a defensive back, Mims has made 36 tackles, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. The running game also includes Corey Washington and Marquell Jefferson, combining for 1,206 yards and 18 touchdowns. The Falcons also have eight players with at least 121 receiving yards.

The Mustangs enter tonight’s game with one question: Will Chris Loatman play? He’s Mira Costa’s leading rusher with 177 carries for 992 yards and seven touchdowns. But he missed last week’s 28-14 quarterfinal victory over Downey Warren because of a twisted knee. In his absence, Morgan Reece and Kellen Lockwood picked up the slack, combining for 227 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
