The rematch for the Southern Section’s Central Division final will be nothing like the first Rancho Cucamonga-Upland game four weeks ago, when high winds (estimated at 50 to 60 mph) caused havoc that resulted in an absence of passing and a 13-2 victory by Rancho at Los Osos High.

There’s no winds tonight at Chaffey College and we’re planning to provide updates at the end of each quarter here at Varsity Times Insider.

The game pits two coaches whose fathers were longtime standout coaches themselves. Rancho Cucamonga (12-0-1) is led by Nick Baiz, whose father, Bob, led Claremont High to a Southern Section title in the 1980s.

Upland (11-2) is led by Tim Salter, who has won two Southern Section crowns already (1995, 2000) and whose father, Dick, is the former coach at Arcadia High, countingHall of Fame offensive lineman Bruce Matthews as a grad.

Tim Salter said the absence of wind tonight should result in more scoring. Stanford-bound quarterback Josh Nunes directs Upland’s offense and running back Michael Boyd stars in the Cougars’ spread-shotgun formation.
