Ed Croson’s decision to leave Birmingham for a private school, West Hills Chaminade, comes with some perks. He won’t have to tape any more athletes before games (the Eagles have a trainer) and he won’t have to chalk the field (they have an all-weather field).

He’s also probably getting a big raise, which is one reason public-school coaches complain about their private-school counterparts.

Here’s a statement from Chaminade Principal Brother Tom Fahy: ‘Ed Croson’s return to Chaminade as football coach is a major development for the football program as well as a boost to the faith development and family spirit elements that are so central to our school’s mission.

‘Ed has always shown a great love for our school and a willingness to assist in any way he could. Since his earlier stint at Chaminade, Ed has achieved remarkable success as a coach and he returns with very valuable experience to a school that has grown in his absence.’

Croson was Chaminade’s athletic director from 1990-97 and football coach from 1997-99. His teams won five West Valley League titles at Birmingham and four City Section titles.
