Boys’ basketball: Tesoro holds off Capistrano Valley

Despite six consecutive missed free throws in the final minute, Tesoro held off Capistrano Valley, 55-53, Wednesday night to come away with an important road victory in a South Coast League game.

Chris Manresa, a 6-foot-8 center headed to San Diego, scored 14 points and had 10 rebounds and six blocks for Tesoro (15-3, 2-0), ranked No. 21 by The Times.

Nick Holmes made one of two free throws with 4.6 seconds left to give Tesoro a 55-51 lead. But the Titans fouled Charles Pfirrmann as he was attempting a three-pointer with .3 seconds left in the the game.

Pfirrmann made his first two free throws, then tried to miss the third. He succeeded but Tesoro got the rebound and the victory.

Mason Mageo contributed four three-pointers for Tesoro and had 14 points. Robbie Picazo had eight of his 10 points in the second half, when Tesoro overcame a 10-point deficit.

Tim Benedix scored 18 points for Capistrano Valley (11-7, 0-2), which lost its fifth consecutive game.
