RBI awards to be given for baseball, softball

Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities is holding its awards banquet Thursday at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, and a group of local high school athletes will be among the featured honorees.

In baseball, Crenshaw senior Kenji Corbisiero will receive the A. Bartlett Giamatti Award for being the top student/athlete. Junior Angelo Gumbs of Torrance will receive the Don Newcombe Award as the rookie of the year. Senior Jonathan Singleton of Long Beach Millikan will receive the Cliff Ditto Award as the most valuable player.

In softball, junior Veronica Vasquez from Carson will be given the Giamatti Award. Sophomore Iman Goss of Westchester will receive the Newcombe Award, and Tiffany Lane from Central Florida will receive the Natasha Watley Award. Senior Adrienne Lozano from Roosevelt and senior Melissa Perez from Garfield will receive the Liz Shapiro Award presented to the softball player who best exemplifies the RBI mission.
