Anyone who walked into Taft’s gym late in the first quarter of the Toreadors’ game against Chatsworth on Wednesday and looked up at the scoreboard might have thought that New York Giants receiver Steve Smith was back playing basketball for Taft.

The score read: Taft 24, Chatsworth 0. By game’s end, Taft had beaten the Chancellors, 75-39, with a running clock used in the fourth quarter because of the mercy rule.

Michael Williams scored 27 points for Taft, and get this statistic: Terran Carter had zero points and 17 rebounds. Now that’s working hard without people noticing.

Taft improved to 21-3 and 9-0 in the West Valley League. The Toreadors have locked up their eighth league championship in the last nine years. They figure to be seeded No. 3 in the Division I playoffs when the pairings are decided on Saturday.
