The Southern Section decided to create a super division this season, putting the perennial powers into Division I-AA, and Friday’s semifinals have brought together the same four teams that made last year’s I-A and I-AA finals -- Mater Dei, Riverside King, Etiwanda and Dominguez.

On Friday, Etiwanda will play Mater Dei at Fontana Miller and King will take on Dominguez, tentatively at Rancho Verde.

Dominguez Coach Duane Cooper played at Lakewood when King assistant Tim Sweeney Sr. was head coach and current King Coach Tim Sweeney Jr. was an assistant.

Mater Dei (29-0) is coming off a close call to Rancho Verde, 72-65. It was the Monarchs’ second-closest game of the season. Etiwanda is known for its man-to-man defense, but Coach Dave Kleckner said, ‘We haven’t seen anybody this big all year,’ referring to the 6-foot-10 Wear brothers.
