Girls’ Basketball: Woodbridge traverses bridge to victory

After trailing by two points at halftime, Woodbridge High went on a 20-11 run at the end of the third quarter and beginning of the fourth to secure the lead and claim a 62-57 victory over Marlborough in the girls’ Southern Section Division III-AA championship game at Santa Ana Mater Dei High.

Top seeded Woodbridge (27-3) converted 25 of 29 free throws. Marlborough (21-10) made only four of 10.

Junior forward Ashley Ward scored 33 points, making 17 of 18 free throws, junior forward Sara McCutchan had 15, converting five of six free throws, and senior forward Julie Walton had 12, making three three-pointers for Woodbridge.

Senior center Talia Caldwell scored 15 points and had seven rebounds, senior guard Jade Smith had 13, and senior guard Taylor Ball had 10 for Marlborough.
