Baseball: Top-ranked Mater Dei shows its pitching

Top-ranked Santa Ana Mater Dei has started the baseball season with consecutive shutouts.

On Friday, Aaron Northcraft threw six shutout innings and Derek Campbell, Taylor McKnight and A.J. Roth hit home runs in an 8-0 victory over Valencia.

On Saturday, Jake Hamblin threw a complete-game shutout in a 3-0 victory over Newport Harbor.

In another game, Reseda Cleveland (2-0) routed Agoura, 14-0, with Juan Perez hitting a grand slam, triple and single, finishing with six runs batted in. Jeremy Stearn, just back from playing basketball, also hit a grand slam during a 12-run second inning.

Harvard-Westlake defeated Buena, 7-3, with Justin Genter getting three hits. Chatsworth defeated Chaminade, 8-2, with Mike Renner throwing a complete game and Carlos Escobar Jr. hitting a home run.

Hart defeated Granada Hills Kennedy, 10-1, with UCLA-bound Trevor Brown getting three hits and five RBIs. Crespi (2-0) defeated Canyon Country Canyon, 10-6, with Kevin Williams getting four hits.
