The big news Monday is that Mater Dei’s pitching staff finally gave up a run. But the Monarchs (3-0) still beat Riverside Patriot, 9-1, in a quarterfinal game of the Newport Elks tournament.

Derek Campbell had a two-run single, and three Mater Dei pitchers scattered 10 hits. The most impressive was Brendan Rowland, a senior who was the team’s top junior varsity pitcher last season. He threw two scoreless innings of relief.
