It’s safe to say that Santa Ana Mater Dei will advance to the quarterfinals of the Division I Southern California Regionals. The Monarchs gave up the opening basket of Monday’s first-round game against Chino Hills, then scored the next 20 points.

They lead Chino Hills, 24-8, after the opening quarter. Mater Dei (30-1), coming off its first loss of the season to Riverside King, decided to change its starting lineup, benching Connor Hughes in favor of Michael Pierce. Former JV player Josh Cook was one of the first players off the bench.

If Mater Dei wins, the Monarchs will play a doubleheader Tuesday at home, with their girls’ team playing at 6 p.m. and the boys’ team following at 7:30 p.m. against the winner of the first-round game between Fresno Edison and Los Angeles Fairfax.
