Baseball: Mater Dei wins championship

Tommy Colton’s run-scoring sacrifice fly in the sixth inning broke a 3-3 tie and lifted Mater Dei to a 4-3 victory over Capistrano Valley Friday night in the championship game of the Newport Elks tournament.

Mater Dei (5-0), ranked No. 1 by The Times, got three hits from Cory Hahn and two RBIs from Aaron Northcraft. Matt Blanchard threw three shutout innings of relief. Tyler Matzek had an RBI single and two-run double for Capistrano Valley (3-2).
