Michael Avery, one of the top freshman basketball players in the San Fernando Valley, is leaving Encino Crespi to attend a boarding school, with Montverde in Montverde, Fla., the likely destination, according to his father, Howard.

Avery, who averaged 9.6 points a game at Crespi, committed to Kentucky as an eighth-grader, then dropped his commitment after the recent coaching change. He’s a 6-foot-5 guard.

‘I’m sorry to see a talent like him go, but these things happen all the time,’ Crespi Coach Russell White said.
