So much for the newly aligned City Section seeding committee having an easy time at Saturday’s scheduled meeting. Not with what happened in the West Valley League on Thursday.

Woodland Hills Taft has opened a 9-2 lead on Chatsworth in the fifth inning. If that score holds up, Reseda Cleveland will be the West Valley champion and the likely No. 1 seed for the Division I playoffs after the Cavaliers defeated Birmingham, 10-1. John Wilson allowed one hit in four innings, and Jeremy Stearn had three RBIs.

That’s the easy part: picking Cleveland (23-7, 13-2) the No. 1 seed. Then comes the uncertainty. If Chatsworth loses, should the Chancellors be No. 2 after losing twice in the last two weeks? And where does Woodland Hills El Camino Real go after losing to Granada Hills, 5-4, on Thursday?

Marine League champion Narbonne is now in position to be the No. 3 seed at worst. Also, Granada Hills clinched fourth place in the West Valley and may have earned a Division I berth.

What’s clear is that Chatsworth’s six-year reign as the No. 1 seed for the playoffs is coming to an end unless the Chancellors pull off a miraculous rally. Taft started the game with two-run home runs from Jordan Berger and Cody Despain.
