San Pedro did it again.

The Pirates just won their 16th City Section title, claiming nine of the last 10.

But this year, they really had to earn it.

The hair-splitting 7-6 victory over Marine League rival Wilmington Banning was sealed in the bottom of the seventh inning when Kayla Monroy hit a single to centerfield, driving in Holly Stevens to break a 6-6 tie.

Top-seeded San Pedro did what it’s famous for doing, and rallied back from a 6-3 fifth-inning deficit, earning its eighth come-from-behind victory of the year.

Ana Cortez of sixth-seeded Banning went 3 for 3 with a double and three RBIs. Stephanie Aguirre and Brenda Santana also had three hits for the Pilots.

Holly Stevens, Kailee Cuico and Kayla Monroy each had two hits for San Pedro (28-4), which gave up 12 hits, while Banning (20-12) gave up nine.

“You gotta give Banning so much credit,” San Pedro Coach Tony Dobra said. “They should have charged double for that game.”
