Mater Dei has been known as a slow-starting team, but its comeback against Norco and unbeaten pitcher Matt Hobgood is making for quite a story.

With the bases loaded and a 3-and-2 count, Cory Hahn of Mater Dei hit a grand slam over the right-field fence, causing the entire Mater Dei team to come out of the dugout to greet him as he touched home plate and gave Mater Dei a 6-3 advantage after four innings of this Southern Section Division I playoff game.

The Monarchs loaded the bases with none out, getting singles from A.J. Roth and Kevin Francke, then a bunt single from Derek Campbell. Hahn then ripped a Hobgood pitch for the home run. Hobgood went on to strike out the side, but he’s trailing and has already thrown 90 pitches.
