Tyler Matzek of Capistrano Valley turned in a performance Saturday that will be long talked about after leading the Cougars to a 1-0 victory over Edison in the Division I final at Angel Stadium.

He came in with the bases loaded in the sixth of a scoreless game and got the third out. Then he hit a home run to right field that landed in the field-level seats down the line for the game’s only run.

He came back out in the seventh and faced more obstacles after hitting a batter and walking consecutive batters on eight straight balls to load the bases with one out.

Then he struck out Chris Czerniachowski on three pitches and ended the game with a strikeout of Josh Lesinski.

Matzek, expected to be a first-round draft choice next week, didn’t allow a run in 18 1/3 innings of playoff action, going 4-0.
