Sophomore pitcher Jose Cardona of Woodland Hills El Camino Real made quite an impression among the many players participating this weekend at the Southwest Future All-Star Series at the Urban Youth Academy in Compton.

He was clocked throwing a 92-mph fastball. One scout said he has a major league fastball and a major league curveball. That’s great news for Coach Josh Lienhard, who figures to build the 2010 Conquistadores around Cardona.

Mater Dei junior outfielder Cory Hahn had one of the fastest 60-yard times, completing the task in 6.7 seconds. Fullerton junior shortstop Dominic Ficociello had three hits in a game Saturday and has been earning rave reviews.

But on Sunday, the standout was Fullerton junior outfielder Michael Lorenzen, who had a single, double and triple. And Simi Valley Royal pitcher Cody Buckel struck out six in three impressive innings. Hueneme pitcher Jesus Valdez showed off a 92 mph fastball.
