First-year Birmingham Coach Jim Rose was happy that his team made it to the semifinals of the Pierce College tournament on Saturday, but he was even more excited about the performance of Rene Reyes, a point guard for the basketball team who he has been trying to get to play football for two years.

‘He did outstanding at cornerback,’ Rose said.

Reyes, a senior, has the speed and leaping ability to play football. Birmingham performed well even though it was without USC-bound running back Trajuan Briggs, who is still participating in track.

New quarterback Max Smith threw two interceptions in six games.
