Perhaps playing a zero week game in suffocating heat affected Hart, which produced zero points in the first half of its 33-28 loss to El Camino Real Friday night at College of the Canyons.

This is the first time in his 21-year tenure that head coach Mike Herrington is doubling as offensive coordinator. Although the Indians’ offense struggled mightily for the first two quarters, it was the inability of the defense to slow down Kawan Rally and El Camino Real’s wing offense that dug Hart a hole too deep to climb out of.

Rally ran for 84 yards and three touchdowns in 10 carries and the Conquistadors dealt Hart its second consecutive season-opening loss (the Indians lost to Palmdale 29-6 last year). Another problem was Hart’s kick coverage, which allowed El Camino Real several long returns--one of for a touchdown.

Jake Stephens rushed 15 times for 104 yards and quarterback C.J. Reyes was 12 of 36 for 187 yards, two touchdowns and one interception for Hart, which trailed 19-0 at halftime and 26-0 early in the third quarter.
