A year ago, there was a five-way tie for first place in the Sunset League, and only three teams were allowed to enter the Pac-5 Division playoffs.

By beating Santa Ana Mater Dei, 36-29, in double overtime Thursday, Huntington Beach Edison helped out the league immensely. Edison also has a win over another Trinity League team, Anaheim Servite. And Newport Harbor has beaten Los Angeles Loyola from the Serra League.

The decision on what at-large team to choose sometimes comes down to head-to-head competition, but league strength matters in a big way, and right now the Sunset League is in good shape to get four playoff berths.
